100% fruit - just apples, grapes and carob and nothing else. No added colours, flavours or preservatives.
Native to the Mediterranean, the fruit of the carob tree grows in a pod like case and has been used for centuries as a natural source of sweetness. It is used in health foods such as carob bars found in health food stores.
Both the Sweetener and the Syrup versions are multipurpose but the Sweetener is very neutral and sugar like in taste and ideal for sweetening hot and cold drinks and for baking and cooking, whereas the Syrup has a deeper more intense flavour - lovely for porridge and spreading on toast instead of honey and using generally in place of honey and golden syrup (it has a lower GL and fewer calories).
Use either for sweetening tart fruits and yoghurt, making ‘no added sugar' (crystalline) cakes, sponge puddings, flapjacks, brownies, cheesecakes, granola, desserts, sauces, custards, dressings, jams, lemon curd, chutneys, pickles, ice cream and ice lollies. Also perfect for stir fries and to add extra taste to your savoury cooking and glazing for BBQ's.
How does it compare calorie wise to sugar?
It has 25% fewer calories than sugar and less than honey and golden syrup.
How much should I use when replacing sugar?
You can reduce the amount used weight for weight by approx 25% (i.e. if recipe calls for 100g of sugar try 75g).
Can I use in my tea and coffee?
Yes, the Sweetener is the most neutral and sugar like so the best choice for tea, whereas both are great in coffee and cocoa etc.
Can I bake ‘no added sugar' (crystalline) cakes with it?
Yes, both the Sweetener and the Syrup work really well and make lovely moist cakes. *Max temp recommended is 180 degrees C
It has a more neutral taste than honey with no bitter after taste and so is more versatile. Children prefer the taste to honey in taste tests.
How does it compare to other sweeteners and sweet syrups?
Unlike most sweeteners and syrups it is extracted using only water and no chemicals or enzymes. You can use it instead of sugar, artificial sweeteners, honey, maple, golden and rice syrups etc.
It is produced in the UK
As it has a low GL (Glycaemic Load) it can help to keep sugary highs and lows at bay and so is a good choice for diabetics as part of a healthy balanced diet.
Yes, young children can also be allergic to honey.
Yes, unlike honey it is vegan friendly and is proving a huge hit with vegans and vegan chefs and restaurants. Sweet Freedom is also registered with The Vegan Society.
Is it GM free and gluten free?
Yes.
Does it contain any additives, preservatives or artificial colours?
No.
Is it like the crystalline fructose you can buy?
No, that is 100% fructose and although it says 'fruit sugar' on the box it's actually made from sugar beet! Sweet Freedom has approx 24 grams of fructose per 100g and so is relatively low in fructose, lower than honey and many other syrups. It contains only the naturally occurring sugars in the three fruits used; apples, grapes and carob.
It is very easy to use from the 'top down' squeezy bottle which has a non drip cap so no mess!
Does it need to be kept in the fridge?
No, it is an ambient product. The shelf life is 2 years.
