Good Housekeeping, February 2010
MOVE OVER MAPLE SYRUP!
Worth investigating we thought. It comes in light and dark variations and is a revelation - the colour of maple syrup with the flavour of caramel. Made entirely from fruit (apples, grapes and carob) with a low GL (glycaemic load) which means it won?'t send your blood sugars haywire, it's good on pancakes in porridge and for baking. At ?2.99 for 400g it's far cheaper than maple syrup. |

Foods Matter July 2009 We were just about to review Sweet Freedom when the following email arrived from FM subscriber Marco: I wonder if you know about the new syrup sweetener called Sweet Freedom. I actually found out about it via Liz the chocolate lady's site that you link to and have been using it ever since. It is a syrup made of only fruit, is gluten free, GM free and vegan. It is made in a nut free factory (I checked as my wife is allergic to nuts). We have bought the last few bottles in Tesco free-from section. It tastes very sugar like and is delicious. My business partner who is diabetic enjoys it to sweeten her coffee, on porridge and pancakes and finds it far better than sugar. My wife has made some amazing flapjacks and desserts with it as well, which are a bit too nice although it is low calorie and GI and so I am allowed! Meanwhile subscription Cressida has also been trying it. This delicious syrup in a handy upside down squeezy bottle is SOOOO convenient - you can squeeze it into your coffee or easily measure out tablespoons into your homemade cakes, puddings and biscuits. It tastes wholesome, without any of that cloying sweet taste that refined sugar products have. And the beauty is that it comes from fruit. |

Pure Artifice Blog: Lucy Freeman Times journalist My latest tasting thing has been some very delicious fruit sweetener, Sweet Freedom. The Cake Baker trie dit out and made some rather fantastic cupcakes, although they were slightly more dense and scone-like than her normal featherlight confections. They were a beautiful golden colour though. She also used it as a cake glaze rather than melting bramble jelly as she normally does. She points out that honey has rather a strong taste but is always being suggested by dieticians as a suitable alternative to sugar in hot drinks, and this would be an ideal substitute, apparently its delicious in coffee. Although 25% less calories does not seem a huge amount I would still much rather eat it than take my chances with aspartame and chemical sweeteners. |
